Napoleon Bonaparte: the Corsican who basically went from zero to hero in the blink of a cannon’s smoke. Born in 1769, this pint-sized powerhouse climbed the military ranks faster than you can say "Vive la France!" By 1796, he was leading the troops like a boss and giving Austrian and Italian armies the runaround.

Flash forward to 1799, he waltzes back to France, pulls a fast one on the government, and voila—First Consul! Then, with a little "Emperor" cherry on top in 1804, he starts painting Europe French blue until, well, Russia and winter happen.

Cut to 1814: he’s exiled to Elba (not the actor), takes a short sabbatical, tries for a comeback, but gets a thumbs-down at Waterloo. Final stop: Saint Helena, where he spends his days presumably dictating his "Should’ve, Would’ve, Could’ve" memoirs until 1821.

Today, he’s the poster boy for French military smarts and ambition, with a legacy that’s part awe, part "oops," and all Napoleon. He is enshrined at Hotel Invalids.
